ABOUT
PUTTING THE ARTIST FIRST
W1 Curates represents the most influential artists in the world because artists are at the heart of our vision – we pride ourselves in showcasing art and creators at the level you’d expect from any world-class gallery or institution.
Our bespoke, in-house batch-matched LED screen technology portrays the artist’s palette true to form without any variation from the original artwork. In short, whites are white with no variation of tone and black is black minus any grey undertones as is typically seen on commercial screens.
W1 Curates invites artists to treat us as a blank canvas. We believe that this approach supports the process of exploration – to push boundaries and maximise creative freedom.
ABOUT
WORKING WITH W1 CURATES
W1 Curates is a one-stop shop for artists and creatives no matter your discipline or perceived challenges. We take care of the facilities, support, and expertise so you can focus on creating.
Our newly-constructed, private, self-contained creative hub and production facility in East London’s Shoreditch offers a discreet, professional-grade, and fully-kitted sanctuary that includes everything you need – recording, photography, and production studios, a podcast den, immersive gallery/event space, artist’s residency and hang out space, generous coworking space (complimented by private bar and kitchen facilities), and a private rooftop terrace. But there is more...
Working with W1 Curates gives the artist the opportunity to roll out a full takeover of our public art platform and/or our private immersive gallery space.
If the artist wishes to curate their own audio production to augment their immersive project, they have full access to our industry standard recording studios, as well as our production and technical team.
To amplify each project, W1 Curates offers inhouse videographers and photographers who will capture the evolution of each project from day one.
NOW LIVE ON W1 CURATES
W1 Curates x Nanzuka Present - Hajime Sorayama
October 13th - November 6th
Hajime Sorayama has established himself as a legendary artist, both within Japan and internationally, for his extensive oeuvre centered on the ongoing pursuit of beauty regarding the human body and the machine.
His signature body of work, the "Sexy Robot" series (1978–), integrates the aesthetic beauty of the female body with the context of the robot. This series has significantly influenced the development of robotic imagery. Notable examples of Sorayama’s influence include the designs for Paul Verhoeven’s celebrated film RoboCop and Thierry Mugler’s 1995 fashion collection.
Sorayama has continued to receive high international acclaim for his many projects, such as collaborating with Sony on the concept design for their entertainment robot AIBO in 1999, providing artwork for the cover of Aerosmith’s 2001 album Just Push Play, and working with designer Kim Jones on the 2018 Dior Men collection. In 2023, Sorayama also collaborated with The Weeknd and F1 driver Lewis Hamilton.
Most recently, he held his largest retrospective to date, "Light, Reflection, Transparency," at NANZUKA ART INSTITUTE in Shanghai, which concluded with great success.
In addition to his works being housed in the permanent collections of museums including the
Museum of Modern Art in New York and M+ in Hong Kong, Sorayama has exhibited widely in numerous prestigious exhibitions worldwide, such as Unorthodox (The Jewish Museum, New York, 2015), Desire (Larry Gagosian and Jeffrey Deitch, Miami, 2016), The Universe and Art (Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, 2016 / Art Science Museum, Singapore, 2017), Cool Japan(Tropenmuseum, Amsterdam, 2018), and Post Human (Jeffrey Deitch, LA, 2024).
